A distraught bride has been awarded over $22,000 in compensation after the wedding reception tent collapsed during her big day due to high winds. The incident occurred when a couple in the U.K rented a yurt for their wedding reception from Yorkshire Yurts. The yurt, which cost a little over $8,600, came crashing down, causing significant distress to the bride, Charlotte Easterby, and her husband, William Easterby. The collapse happened during their June 2024 nuptials near Guisborough, England.

According to reports from The Telegraph, staff from Yorkshire Yurts mentioned in court that the area was very windy on the couple’s wedding day, and the site was incredibly exposed. Despite the company’s claims that the yurt could have been fixed and used for the reception, the bride and groom found themselves in a difficult situation. The company allegedly offered a smaller yurt as an alternative, but it would not accommodate half of their 180 guests.

District Judge Andrew MacCuish presided over the case and noted that the burden of salvaging the wedding reception fell on the couple. As a last-minute solution, the couple had to opt for a marquee and a mobile bar from another provider. However, this arrangement was described as “less than perfect” and uncomfortable for the guests. A witness statement from wedding caterer Sarah Readman highlighted the challenging conditions of the alternative setup, with tables crammed together, limiting guest movement and comfort.

In court, MacCuish echoed the bride’s distress over the ruined wedding plans and stressed the company’s breach of contract by failing to deliver the appropriate tent for the special event. The judge emphasized that Yorkshire Yurts did not make sufficient efforts to fulfil their obligations regarding the tent’s erection, leading to the collapse. Consequently, the company was ordered to reimburse the couple for the cost of the tent and provide additional compensation, totalling over $22,000.
The ruling highlighted the emotional turmoil experienced by Mrs. Easterby, who was described as stressed, sleepless, and in tears due to the wedding mishap. The court held the company accountable for the faulty erection method and inadequate personnel deployment, indicating a clear breach of contract. The judge’s decision to award substantial compensation to the couple reflects the severity of the situation and the impact it had on their once-in-a-lifetime event.
The outcome of this case serves as a reminder of the importance of ensuring proper construction and safety measures for special events like weddings. It also underlines the legal recourse available to individuals in situations where service providers fail to meet their obligations. The couple’s perseverance in seeking justice for their disrupted celebration sheds light on the significance of holding accountable those responsible for such incidents.
As couples continue to plan and organise weddings, the story of Charlotte and William Easterby stands as a cautionary tale, urging vigilance in assessing the reliability and credibility of vendors and service providers. The court’s verdict not only validates the couple’s grievances but also sets a precedent for accountability in the events industry. Ultimately, the resolution of this case emphasises the value of upholding contractual agreements and ensuring the successful execution of significant life milestones.
