Siena University is mourning the loss of their esteemed men’s lacrosse coach, Liam Gleason, who tragically passed away at the age of 41 after sustaining a traumatic brain injury from a fall in his home. Gleason, a beloved figure in the university’s athletic community, had served as the men’s lacrosse coach for seven seasons and was instrumental in leading the team to their first national title in over a decade.

The sudden and senseless loss of Gleason has deeply affected those who knew him, with the school’s President, Chuck Seifert, Ph.D, expressing the community’s profound grief. Gleason, who celebrated his 41st birthday just days before the tragic incident, was a respected alum and former coach for Siena’s rival, the University at Albany.

Gleason’s contributions to the Siena men’s lacrosse program were significant, culminating in a MAAC championship earlier this year – a milestone achievement that had not been accomplished in 14 years. His dedication and coaching prowess were recognised with both ECAC and MAAC Coach of the Year honours, underscoring his impact on the team and the sport.
The university paid tribute to Gleason by organising a “Hero Walk” as he was prepared for surgery to donate some of his organs, showcasing the immense respect and admiration he garnered from his colleagues and players. Memorial services for Gleason will be held on December 6 at the university grounds, providing an opportunity for the community to honour and remember a remarkable coach and individual.
Gleason’s family, including his wife of 12 years, Jaclyn, their three children – Kennedy, Penn, and Tate – and his parents and brother, are left to navigate this heartbreaking loss. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support the Gleason family during this challenging time, highlighting the impact that Gleason had on those around him and the love he shared with his family and friends.
The legacy of Liam Gleason extends far beyond his coaching achievements, as he is remembered as a beacon of light in the lives of all who knew him. His compassion, dedication, and the positive influence he had on his players and the broader community will leave a lasting imprint on Siena University and beyond.
The lacrosse community and the wider sports world mourn the passing of a talented coach and a remarkable individual, whose memory will continue to inspire and uplift those who had the privilege of knowing him. As Siena University grapples with the loss of a beloved member of their community, they honour the legacy of Liam Gleason and the indelible mark he left on the hearts of all who crossed his path.
