Authorities in Delaware recently revealed that a potential violent attack plot targeting the University of Delaware was foiled due to a fortuitous late-night traffic stop near the campus. Luqmaan Khan, a 25-year-old former student, was apprehended by officers from the New Castle County Police Department on November 24th, with allegations suggesting he was planning a violent incident on the university grounds.

The arrest occurred after Khan’s pickup truck was pulled over by police officers in a park located approximately 15 miles away from the university. Officers grew suspicious of Khan when he refused to exit his vehicle, leading them to discover a cache of tactical-style weapons and disturbing writings hinting at a planned attack on the university campus.

Inside Khan’s vehicle, officers found a loaded Glock .357 handgun, four loaded 27-round extended magazines, body armor, binoculars, a laptop, and a notebook containing notes on warfare techniques and premeditated assault plans. The notebook also included a diagram of the University of Delaware Police Department, further indicating Khan’s alleged intentions.
Reports from the Delaware News Journal detailed that Khan’s notebook featured elaborate diagrams of campus buildings and messages referencing his desire to become a “martyr.” According to court documents, Khan reportedly expressed during an interrogation that his ultimate goal was martyrdom and believed it to be “one of the greatest things you can do.” However, no additional specifics regarding Khan’s beliefs were disclosed in the documents.
Following Khan’s initial arrest, the FBI searched his residence in Wilmington, uncovering more weaponry. The findings included a Glock 19 9mm handgun with an illegal machine gun conversion device, a .556 rifle with accessories, additional extended magazines, ammunition, and a tactical vest. Khan now faces multiple charges, including possession of a large-capacity magazine, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, and possession of a machine gun.
Khan, a U.S. citizen born in Pakistan and raised in Wilmington, was a student at the University of Delaware at the time of his arrest. In response to the incident, university Interim President Laura Carlson issued a statement confirming Khan’s temporary exclusion from campus pending legal proceedings. Following his arraignment, Khan was handed over to federal custody for further processing.
With a preliminary court hearing for his state charges scheduled on December 9th, Khan is expected to appear in federal court for a detention hearing shortly thereafter. Potential penalties for the charges filed against Khan remain undisclosed, with the FBI indicating a maximum imprisonment term of 10 years if convicted.
This incident highlights the critical role of law enforcement in preventing potential threats to public safety. The swift actions taken by authorities serve as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and proactive measures to safeguard communities from harm. As the case unfolds in the legal system, the focus remains on ensuring justice is served and that any further threats are effectively mitigated.
