A Thanksgiving gathering took a heartbreaking turn when a heated argument between two brothers ended in tragedy, with one dead and the other arrested. The incident, which unfolded in Lakewood, California, left the local community in shock.
The distressing event occurred around 2:40 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 27, as reported by CBS News and NBC Los Angeles, citing information from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD). Deputies responding to the scene discovered a man with a gunshot wound near a vehicle. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, the victim succumbed to his injuries. As of now, the identity of the deceased has not been disclosed to the public.

According to the LASD, both brothers were engaged in a dispute inside a vehicle, which escalated into a fatal shooting. The suspect exited the car following the altercation, but law enforcement swiftly intervened, managing to detain him just a block and a half away.
Ruiz Jr. is currently in custody with a bail set at $2 million, as seen in inmate records reviewed by PEOPLE. His court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 2. At this point, it is unclear whether Ruiz Jr. has legal representation available to provide statements on his behalf.
The investigation into this tragic incident is still ongoing, with authorities urging anyone with relevant information to come forward. The LASD’s Homicide Bureau is actively pursuing leads and can be contacted at (323) 890-5500 for assistance. Despite several enquiries, the LASD had not responded to requests for comment from PEOPLE as of Saturday, Nov. 29.
