In a heartbreaking turn of events, a 5-year-old girl from Cornwall, England, tragically passed away just four days after undergoing a routine tonsil operation. Amber Milnes, described affectionately as “our magical little princess” by her devastated parents, Sereta and Lewis Milnes, died on April 9, 2023, at the Royal Cornwall Hospital following complications from the surgery.

The young girl’s untimely death has sparked an investigation and raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the procedure. Senior coroner Andrew Cox revealed that Amber, who also suffered from Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome (CVS), succumbed to a “known but very rare” complication arising from the surgery to remove her tonsils and adenoids. Dr. Andrew Bamber, a paediatric pathologist, confirmed the cause of her death as a severe bleeding incident at the surgery site.
According to reports, Amber’s parents expressed concerns during the investigation, highlighting that she was not kept overnight in the hospital post-surgery despite her medical history with CVS. Cox acknowledged these concerns, stating that the potential risks associated with triggering a CVS episode due to the operation were foreseeable. He suggested that it might have been prudent for the hospital to consider keeping Amber under observation for a longer period after the surgery.
The tragic sequence of events unfolded after Amber underwent the tonsil operation to address her sleep apnea, a condition characterised by interrupted breathing during sleep. Following the surgery on April 5, 2023, Amber was discharged from the hospital, but she began vomiting excessively the next day. Her parents sought medical advice when her condition worsened, leading to her readmittance to the hospital on the evening of April 6.
Subsequently, Amber developed an infection at the surgical site, which progressed to a hemorrhage, ultimately resulting in her passing on April 9. The lack of prompt action and thorough consultation regarding Amber’s unique medical circumstances has raised critical questions about the decisions made during her care.
In a touching tribute to their beloved daughter, Sereta Milnes described Amber as their “magical little princess” who brought immense joy to their home. Amidst the grief and loss, the Milnes family and the community mourn the devastating impact of Amber’s passing, a life cut short under tragic circumstances.
The Royal Cornwall Hospital, where the surgery took place, and the Cornwall Coroner’s Court are yet to provide detailed responses to the findings of the investigation. However, statements from the NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board expressed condolences to Amber’s family and acknowledged the need for enhanced awareness and protocols for children with conditions such as CVS and sleep apnea undergoing similar procedures.
This deeply saddening incident serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of thorough considerations in medical interventions, especially for vulnerable patients like young children. As investigations continue and lessons are learnt from this tragedy, the memory of Amber Milnes will remain a symbol of innocence lost and a call for heightened vigilance in healthcare practices to prevent similar devastating outcomes in the future.
