An 18-year-old girl, Melinda Brown, disappeared after attending a house party in Simi Valley, California, on November 15, 1998. Her body was discovered near a shallow grave in the Hungry Valley area of Los Padres National Forest near Gorman, 12 days after she went missing. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the case, suspecting that Melinda may have known her killer.

According to Sergeant Craig Hennes, Melinda said goodbye to her parents and headed to the party at around 7 p.m. Following a police shut down at the original party location due to noise complaints, Melinda and her friends relocated to an apartment complex nearby, where they continued to socialize until the early hours of the morning. However, she failed to return home that night and also missed her work shift at In-N-Out Burger two days later, prompting her family to report her missing.
Melinda’s remains were uncovered just a few hundred yards off a dirt road in a remote area of the forest, showing signs of animal activity. Sergeant Hennes indicated that Melinda had been shot in the back, indicating foul play in her death. Despite various leads and witness statements, the exact location of Melinda’s murder remains a mystery to investigators.
Detectives are currently exploring updated DNA processing technology in the hopes of obtaining new leads in the case. Samples collected from the crime scene are being re-evaluated for potential matches, offering a glimmer of hope for solving the decades-old murder. There is a belief among law enforcement that Melinda may have been acquainted with her assailant, dismissing the notion of a random attack.
The community is urged to come forward with any information that could shed light on Melinda’s tragic fate. Detective Torres expressed optimism that individuals who may have withheld details in the past may now feel compelled to cooperate with authorities. Despite facing challenges due to a lack of cooperation during the initial investigation, law enforcement remains steadfast in their pursuit of justice for Melinda.
