A Utah father is facing serious charges of aggravated child abuse and child torture after a harrowing hiking trip in Big Cottonwood Canyon took a traumatic turn for him and his three young children. Micah Smith, initially hailed as a hero for his actions during the ordeal, is now at the centre of a legal battle following the terrifying incident that left his children hospitalized, with his 4-year-old son reportedly suffering a stroke.
The story began when Micah Smith and his three children – an 8-year-old daughter, 4-year-old son, and 2-year-old son – found themselves caught in a storm while hiking in Utah’s Big Cottonwood Canyon. The family was reported missing and rescued the following day, with two of the children in critical condition, while Smith was listed in “fair condition” and the third child in stable condition.

Initially praised for his actions during the dire situation, Smith’s image took a drastic turn with the recent revelation of charges against him. The Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office has accused Smith of choosing to proceed with the hike despite the children’s well-being being compromised. According to reports on KSL, Fox 13, and ABC 4, authorities claim that Smith prioritised summiting a mountain over ensuring the safety and welfare of his children.
Allegations against Smith suggest that during the 24-hour ordeal, the children expressed distress, indicating they were cold, tired, and wanted to return home. However, authorities claim that Smith, in his role as the children’s protector, displayed negligence by being ill-prepared and allegedly selfish in his decision-making. Reports suggest that upon rescue, Smith exhibited unusual behaviour and appeared unconcerned about the children’s condition, further raising suspicions.
The 4-year-old child’s condition particularly highlights the severity of the situation, with reports indicating that he required extensive medical attention upon being rescued. Paramedics had to perform 25 minutes of CPR on the young boy as he was rushed to the hospital with a body temperature as low as 62.6 degrees. Subsequently, he suffered a stroke and underwent a surgical procedure to address his critical condition.
Additional disturbing details from the incident include a video found on Smith’s phone where his 8-year-old daughter can be heard questioning their safety during the ordeal. The hike itself has been described as challenging and unsuitable for children or inexperienced hikers, raising concerns over the decision-making process that led to the unfortunate consequences for the family.
As the investigation unfolds, questions remain regarding Smith’s actions and the events that transpired during the ill-fated hiking trip. It is essential to understand the full context of the situation and the implications of the charges brought against him as the legal process progresses.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of preparedness and safety measures when engaging in outdoor activities, particularly with children involved. The incident’s tragic outcome underscores the critical need for responsible decision-making and prioritising the well-being of all individuals, especially when venturing into challenging environments.
Amidst the ongoing developments in the legal proceedings, the focus remains on seeking justice for the affected children and ensuring accountability for the actions that led to this distressing situation. The significance of this case extends beyond the individual circumstances, serving as a cautionary tale for all individuals engaging in outdoor pursuits, emphasizing the paramount importance of safety and careful consideration in such endeavours.
