A woman from Chicago has bravely shared her story of how her addiction to cocaine resulted in a severe deterioration of her nose, leaving her with a noticeable physical deformity. Kelly Kozyra, now 38 years old, started snorting cocaine in 2017 following a night out with friends and soon found herself struggling with addiction to the drug. She revealed that her habit escalated quickly, leading her to spend nearly $80,000 on cocaine in less than two years.

The detrimental effects of her addiction began to manifest after just three months of regular cocaine use, with Kozyra experiencing nosebleeds and skin deterioration in her nasal area. Despite noticing the damage to her septum, the wall that separates the nostrils, she continued to snort cocaine in the hope that it would somehow heal itself. As her habit persisted, the septum completely deteriorated, causing a hole to form on the outside of her nose, which eventually grew to the size of a dime.
Even with the physical deformity becoming increasingly severe, Kozyra did not stop her cocaine use. Instead, she adapted by resorting to extreme measures such as using her pinky finger to hold the cocaine in place inside her nose to prevent it from falling out through the hole. The extent of the damage was not limited to external changes, as cocaine abuse can also lead to sinus issues, inflammation, infection, and even necrosis, according to American Addiction Centers.
Despite the distressing physical consequences of her addiction, Kozyra continued to use drugs until she made the courageous decision to quit in 2021. Since then, she has maintained sobriety and undergone an incredible 15 surgeries to reconstruct her nose. Reflecting on her journey, Kozyra expressed her desire to help others by becoming a substance abuse counselor, highlighting the destructive impact that cocaine had on her life and her appearance.
Opening up about her experience, Kozyra hopes that her story will serve as a cautionary tale and a source of inspiration for those struggling with substance abuse. By sharing her harrowing ordeal, she aims to raise awareness about the dangers of addiction and the importance of seeking help. If you or someone you know is battling substance abuse, support is available through resources such as the SAMHSA helpline at 1-800-662-HELP.
Kelly Kozyra’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the devastating effects of addiction and the resilience required to overcome such challenges. Her journey towards recovery is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the transformative power of seeking help and making positive changes. Kozyra’s determination to rebuild her life after experiencing such profound loss is an inspiration to others facing similar struggles, offering hope and encouragement on the path to healing.
