IU Indianapolis Basketball Team Safe After Bus Fire

On February 23, the Indiana University Indianapolis men’s basketball team had a harrowing experience when their team bus caught fire after a mechanical issue during their journey back from a game against Northern Kentucky University. The incident took place on I-275 near Lawrenceburg, Ind., leaving the bus and all the players’ belongings destroyed. Fortunately, all team members and staff evacuated the bus safely without any injuries, as confirmed by firefighters and the athletic department.
The blaze not only destroyed the bus but also wiped out around $20,000 worth of the team’s equipment and gear, including computers, video equipment, and multiple pairs of basketball shoes. Head coach Paul Corsaro expressed gratitude that everyone made it out unharmed, emphasising that material items can be replaced, but people cannot. The fire reportedly started when a tire near the bus’s gas tank exploded, leading to a swift escalation of flames at the back of the bus.
Despite the frightening ordeal, swift action by one of the coaching staff members and the assistance of a local school bus driver ensured the team’s safe return. Amber Pickett, the driver who came to their aid, picked up the team and took them to a nearby location until alternative transportation was arranged back to campus. The community support following the incident has been overwhelming, with efforts being made to provide necessary essentials for the players as they prepare to resume their season.
As the transportation company investigates the cause of the fire, the team remains focused on their upcoming game against Robert Morris University. Coach Corsaro commended his players for their resilience in the face of adversity, highlighting their strength as they prepare to face off against the conference’s top-ranked team.
