Paul Doyle, a former Royal Marine, has tearfully pleaded guilty to charges related to a devastating crash that injured over 130 people during a celebratory parade for Liverpool’s Premier League soccer championship. The incident, which occurred on May 26, saw Doyle initially denying the charges before changing his plea on the second day of his trial at the Liverpool Crown Court.
Doyle, a 54-year-old father of two, faced charges including dangerous driving, affray, multiple counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, and wounding with intent. The tragic event took place while Liverpool F.C. was celebrating their second-ever Premier League Championship with thousands of fans lining the city’s streets.

Reports indicate that Doyle attempted to follow an ambulance down a road that was closed off for the parade. Witnesses described him becoming irate before deliberately driving into the crowd of fans. Chaos ensued as individuals tried to remove him from the vehicle, leading to police intervention to control the situation.

The victims of the crash ranged in age, with injuries reported from children as young as six months old to a 77-year-old individual. The chief crown prosecutor, Sarah Hammond, revealed during Doyle’s trial that dashcam footage showed his deliberate actions of driving into the crowd, turning a joyous celebration into a scene of mayhem.
Detective Chief Inspector John Fitzgerald highlighted the impact of Doyle’s reckless behavior, stating that it was only by sheer luck that no fatalities occurred as a result of the incident. Fitzgerald described how within seven minutes, Doyle’s car collided with over 100 people, causing serious injuries and trapping some individuals underneath the vehicle.
Despite initially denying the charges, Doyle ultimately accepted his guilt on Wednesday. His sentencing is scheduled for December 15 and 16, with Judge Andrew Menary KC indicating that a custodial sentence of significant length is inevitable. The consequences of Doyle’s actions have left a lasting physical and psychological toll on the victims and the community, turning what was intended to be a day of celebration into a distressing experience.
The tragic outcome of the Liverpool parade crash serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of reckless driving and the importance of ensuring public safety during large-scale events. As the legal proceedings continue, the focus remains on providing support to the victims and their families as they navigate the aftermath of this traumatic incident.
