A grandmother of four, Dena Suihkonen, found herself paralyzed after a tragic accident occurred at a dunk tank during a family outing. Suihkonen, a 59-year-old EMT and ambulance director, suffered a spinal cord injury after being launched out of the dunk tank during a 4th of July community celebration. Recounting the incident, she expressed that the malfunctioning seat of the tank resulted in her being tossed to the ground, leading to a burst in her T12 vertebra and subsequent spinal cord damage. This sudden turn of events has left Suihkonen grappling with life-altering consequences.

The unfortunate incident took place at the annual Breitung Township Picnic in Minnesota, where Suihkonen was enjoying a day out with her four grandchildren. As part of the festivities, public service representatives, including Suihkonen as the Tower Area Ambulance Services Director, took turns being dunked in the tank. However, a mechanical issue with the seat caused her to be forcefully thrown backward, resulting in the catastrophic injury. Although the severity of her condition might not have been immediately apparent to onlookers, Suihkonen, with her medical background, recognised the gravity of the situation without delay.
Upon realising she had lost sensation in her legs, a tell-tale sign of a significant spinal injury, Suihkonen swiftly requested a medical flight to be arranged. The swift response from the medical team on-site ensured her transfer to the nearest Level 1 trauma centre for urgent treatment. Following scans and medical assessments, it was revealed that she had sustained multiple spinal fractures, culminating in a complete spinal cord injury at the T11 level. Emergency spinal surgery and subsequent intensive rehabilitation marked the beginning of a challenging journey towards recovery for Suihkonen.

In addition to the spinal injury, Suihkonen was also found to have multiple brain aneurysms unrelated to the accident, necessitating further surgical interventions. The once highly active EMT now faces the reality of being paraplegic and adapting to a new way of life that extends beyond physical limitations. Despite the immense personal struggles, one of the most poignant realities for Suihkonen is the inability to continue serving her community as a first responder, a role she deeply cherished in her small town setting.
The road to recovery for Suihkonen is laden with challenges, including the need for significant modifications to her home to accommodate her limited mobility. The unexpected financial burden incurred as a result of the necessary adjustments has prompted her family to initiate a GoFundMe campaign, which has garnered substantial support from well-wishers. The unwavering solidarity from her family, friends, and community members serves as a source of strength for Suihkonen as she navigates through the profound changes brought about by the accident.
As Suihkonen strives to come to terms with her new reality and embarks on a journey of rehabilitation and adjustment, her resilience and unwavering spirit shine through. Despite the hardships and uncertainties that lie ahead, the support and encouragement from her loved ones remain a guiding light in her path to recovery. The poignant tale of Dena Suihkonen serves as a testament to the indomitable human spirit in the face of adversity, embodying resilience, courage, and hope in the midst of life’s unexpected challenges.
