A man in Florida has been convicted of second-degree murder for fatally stabbing his girlfriend with a steak knife before dropping her children off at daycare as if it were any other day. The Seminole County jury deliberated for just 14 minutes before finding Farel Torres guilty of killing Vanessa Santiago in their Casselberry home on May 29, 2024. Prosecutors argued that Torres committed the crime out of anger because Santiago was ending their relationship and asking him to leave the apartment they shared with their 3-year-old son and her 5-year-old son from a previous relationship.

During the trial, it was revealed that there were several video cameras in the apartment capturing footage of the couple’s altercation the day before the murder and into the early morning hours of the fatal day. Domenick Leo, chief trial attorney for the 18th Circuit, explained that Torres even tampered with some cameras to hide his actions of retrieving the knife used in the attack. The footage captured the horrifying moment when Torres fatally stabbed Santiago multiple times, with her 5-year-old son present in the room witnessing the brutal act.

The tragic incident unfolded as Santiago was sitting on the floor, telling Torres to leave, and he proceeded to stab her in the chest, abdomen, ear, and face ultimately leaving the knife lodged in her skull. Santiago sustained at least seven stab wounds during the attack. Leo described the heartbreaking scene captured on camera, with the older child walking into the room, seeing his mother being stabbed, and then being told to leave by Torres. The children were seen trying to peek under the door to see what was happening to their mother, further illustrating the devastating impact of the crime on the innocent young boys.
After the heinous act, Torres cleaned up the crime scene, got the children ready, and took them to daycare, where he dropped them off casually before returning home and calling the police to confess his crime. Despite his efforts to appear normal, the chilling CCTV footage from the daycare facility captured his demeanor as he dropped off the children as if nothing had happened. This callous behaviour shocked the authorities and highlighted the cold-hearted actions of the perpetrator in the aftermath of the murder.
The jury’s swift decision to convict Torres reflects the gravity of his actions and the compelling evidence presented during the trial. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of Santiago. The case serves as a stark reminder of the harrowing consequences of domestic violence and its profound impact on families and communities. It also underscores the importance of reporting and addressing signs of abuse to prevent such tragic events from occurring in the future.
The tragic story of Vanessa Santiago’s untimely death has left a scar on all those involved, especially her children who witnessed the horrific crime. The swift justice served in this case brings some closure to her loved ones but also serves as a reminder of the ongoing need to address and combat domestic violence in society.
