An elderly man diagnosed with dementia took a heartwarming step by marrying his girlfriend of 15 years before his condition worsened. Terry Smith, 86, decided to tie the knot with Jo Johnson, 91, after receiving the challenging diagnosis of dementia. The couple, from Kessingland, England, had always envisioned getting married, and the news of Smith’s health condition prompted them to expedite their plans to create lasting memories together.

The pair opted for a civil ceremony at the Lowestoft Register Office in Suffolk on Friday, Nov. 21, foregoing the typical engagement period. Johnson expressed her joy over the marriage, stating, “I’ve wanted to [get married] for a long time, but I’ve never said anything because he’s been unwell.” Despite Smith’s illness, Johnson shared that he remains happy, and they continue to enjoy their time together by singing and walking around the house.
Their heartwarming love story began when Johnson’s daughter introduced them six years after she lost her former husband. Initially hesitant to embark on a new relationship, Johnson eventually embraced the opportunity for love upon her daughter’s encouragement. Reflecting on their journey, Smith humorously recalled, “She didn’t want to know me when I first met her. I don’t know [why].” From that moment on, their bond flourished, leading to their recent nuptials.

On their wedding day, coincidentally also Johnson’s birthday, Smith accompanied his bride down the aisle with her grandson by her side. Dressed in a vibrant, floor-length gown and holding a delicate bouquet, Johnson radiated joy as she exchanged vows with her beloved. Their heartfelt commitment to each other deeply moved their friends and family, with Johnson’s daughter expressing pride in their union, calling it an “amazing thing.”
Registrar David Hunt, who oversaw the ceremony, described the experience as “special,” noting that the Smiths may be the oldest couple he has had the privilege to marry. He shared his bond with the couple, stating, “I’ve been on a journey with this couple. I first met them well over a year ago when they came in to inquire about how they get married. [Now], they’ve become almost good friends to me.” Witnessing their love-filled celebration brought a sense of joy and warmth to all in attendance.
The couple’s decision to marry amid challenging circumstances serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring power of love and companionship. Their commitment to each other in sickness and in health exemplifies the strength of their bond and the profound impact of cherishing every moment together. The touching story of Terry Smith and Jo Johnson serves as a testament to the enduring nature of love, resilience, and the ability to find joy in the midst of adversity.
