The Yarmouth Fire Department received a distress call at approximately 8:50 a.m. on Tuesday, November 18, reporting a trench collapse near the Skipper Chowder Restaurant close to Parker’s River Beach. The initial report indicated that multiple individuals were trapped in the trench.

Upon their arrival at 8:55 a.m., the Barnstable County Technical Rescue Team and the Yarmouth Fire Department found three victims at the scene, with one managing to extricate themselves. Fire Chief Enrique Arrascue revealed to the Cape Cod Times that two people were located in the trench, with one individual trapped up to their waist. Another person had valiantly attempted a rescue and ended up partially trapped in the collapse.

The rescue operation spanned over four hours, during which personnel successfully liberated one of the victims, who was swiftly transported to Rhode Island Hospital via Boston Med Flight. Tragically, the third victim, identified as 61-year-old Miguel Reis, remained trapped and subsequently lost his life. His body was recovered from the trench around 2:45 p.m. The Yarmouth Fire Department extended their deepest condolences to Reis and acknowledged the ongoing investigation by local, state, and federal authorities, including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
