A distressing video exclusive to PEOPLE has captured the heart-wrenching moment a baby humpback whale became entangled in fishing lines and stranded on a beach. The heart-wrenching footage has been widely shared across social media platforms, shining a spotlight on the challenges faced by marine wildlife.
The incident unfolded on the Oregon Coast, where a juvenile humpback whale found itself caught in fishing lines, unable to break free. Bystanders rallied to the scene, battling the surf in a bid to help the stranded whale. The efforts were captured in a viral TikTok video by creator Jacob Colvin, also known online as @Jake.pnw.
In the video, onlookers can be seen struggling against powerful waves, attempting to turn the whale’s tail towards the rising tide. The situation was perilous, with the massive 25-30 ton animal thrashing in the unforgiving current. Colvin, who rushed to the scene after receiving a call from a friend, described how the group worked tirelessly to rotate the whale back towards the ocean.
Despite their best efforts, the conditions were treacherous, particularly during the ‘King Tide’ season when waters are at their coldest and roughest. The risks were high, with several individuals falling into the ripping currents. Fortunately, no one sustained serious injuries, although the situation remained critical as the exhausted whale continued to struggle.
Marine biologist Carrie Newell, from Whale Research Eco Excursions, issued a warning against approaching beached whales. The animals, not designed to be out of the water, face grave dangers when stranded on land. The internal organs of a beached whale become compressed without the buoyancy of water, leading to life-threatening complications.
Efforts to rescue the distressed whale continued as experts from multiple organisations arrived on the scene with ropes, pulleys, and other equipment. Despite the challenges, hopes for a miracle remained high as the community banded together to support the stranded whale.
The juvenile humpback, estimated to be 2 to 3 years old and weighing between 25 to 30 tons, faced an uphill battle for survival. Newell highlighted the dangers posed by abandoned fishing gear, emphasising the need for stronger regulations to protect marine life.
As the world watches and waits for updates on the stranded whale, the collective hope is for a positive outcome. With experts on-site and the community rallying together, there is a glimmer of optimism that the young humpback may yet find its way back to the safety of the ocean.
