A woman from Abilene, Texas, has shared her harrowing experience of a symptom she faced months before being diagnosed with breast cancer. Kelly Mann, a university professor and mother of three, detailed her ordeal that ultimately led to her life-changing diagnosis in July 2023.
Mann’s journey began over two years ago when she started experiencing severe pink eye infections. Despite trying antibiotic drops, the redness persisted. The cycle of pink eye occurred six times between April and June 2023, prompting Mann to seek medical attention after discovering a lump on her body one night while watching TV.

Following a mammogram and biopsy, Mann received the devastating news in late July 2023 that she had stage 2 breast cancer, just a week before her 36th birthday. The rapid growth of the tumour shocked Mann, especially as she had a clean breast exam just months prior.

Commencing chemotherapy shortly after her diagnosis, Mann encountered a familiar pattern when the pink eye symptoms resurfaced post-treatment. Consulting with an ophthalmologist, she discovered that the pink eye was actually episcleritis – a condition linked to underlying inflammatory or rheumatologic issues.
Throughout her cancer journey, which included chemotherapy, mastectomy, breast reconstruction, and ongoing therapies until October 2024, Mann battled not only the physical toll but also the emotional strain of the disease. Despite the challenges, her focus remained on her three children, who provided the strength and motivation to persevere.
Now 38 and a cancer survivor, Mann is utilising her social media platform to raise awareness about episcleritis and the importance of early detection. She aims to support and connect with other young patients facing similar battles, offering a beacon of hope and understanding in a challenging journey.
Mann’s courage and resilience serve as a testament to the power of sharing one’s story and advocating for health awareness. Her determination to be a resource and support system for others grappling with breast cancer exemplifies the spirit of community and solidarity in the face of adversity.
As more individuals like Mann come forward to shed light on their experiences, the importance of recognising and addressing unusual symptoms cannot be overstated. Early detection remains a crucial factor in improving outcomes for cancer patients, underlining the significance of proactive healthcare measures and regular screenings.
Mann’s journey is a poignant reminder of the resilience and strength that individuals showcase in the face of adversity. By highlighting her story, she not only raises awareness about breast cancer and episcleritis but also underscores the importance of prioritising health and advocating for oneself in navigating the challenges of a cancer diagnosis.
In a world where sharing experiences and offering support can make a meaningful difference, Mann’s unwavering commitment to raising awareness and empowering others stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration. Her story serves as a testament to the transformative power of community, resilience, and the unwavering spirit to overcome obstacles in the journey towards healing and recovery.
