Jutes, the talented singer-songwriter, has recently shared insights into his latest single, “It Takes Two,” alongside reflections on overcoming toxic habits and embracing change in an exclusive interview. The music video for “It Takes Two” was released on Wednesday, Nov. 12, showcasing Jutes’ emotional depth and growth as an artist.
The 34-year-old musician, born Jordan Lutes, bared his soul to PEOPLE, describing how the song delves into past emotions and experiences. He revealed that the track is deeply personal to him, touching on themes of desperate love and emotional turmoil. Reflecting on his teenage self, Jutes shared, “‘It Takes Two’ feels more like how I used to be — in the sense of maybe a little bit toxic.”
In the interview, Jutes candidly acknowledged his previous struggles with intense emotions and toxic relationships, admitting to being consumed by feelings of desperation in the past. However, he emphasised that he has since grown and evolved, finding peace and balance in his current healthy relationship, especially after marrying Demi Lovato earlier this year.
While his latest single may evoke past vulnerabilities, Jutes explained that he draws strength from writing emotionally charged songs. He shared, “This song is my bread and butter as far as these really intensely emotional, kind of desperate songs that I write.” The accompanying music video for “It Takes Two” captures the raw intensity of the song, depicting Jutes performing on the edge of a building to symbolise the feeling of impending doom when someone exits one’s life.
Jutes also revealed that “It Takes Two” will be featured on the extended version of his recent project, Dilworth, named after the street where he grew up in Canada. He explained, “It touches on so many emotions and so many things that I went through when I was younger.”
Currently on his Sleepyhead Tour in support of his 2024 album of the same name, Jutes shared his journey towards overcoming fears and imposter syndrome, particularly in the face of sobriety. He expressed a newfound resilience towards his anxieties, stating, “Your comfort zone grows the more you get outside of it. So for me, it’s not really about getting rid of [those fears] because that’s what I used to use alcohol and whatnot for. I just face them.”
As Jutes reflects on his personal growth and the evolution of his music, he offers a message of self-acceptance and growth. He encourages others to embrace change and evolve, stating, “It’s okay to change. It’s good to remember where you came from and who you used to be and be self-aware, but I think changing and growing is a prerequisite to being happy.”
