A tragic incident unfolded over the weekend as a father bravely jumped into a Texas river to rescue his son and his son’s friend when their kayak capsized. The heartbreaking turn of events saw the two teens tragically losing their lives, while the father remains missing.

According to a news release from the San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Office, emergency responders were called to the Camilla boat ramp on Sunday evening, November 9th, after reports of a capsized kayak in the turbulent waters of the Trinity River. Witnesses recounted that the kayak overturned due to rough river conditions, leading to the father entering the water in a valiant effort to save his son and his son’s friend. However, he did not resurface.

The bodies of the two juveniles, aged 15 and 14, were later recovered from the river. Texas Game Wardens have since launched an extensive search and rescue operation for the missing 53-year-old man, employing a variety of resources including game wardens, an Underwater Search and Recovery Team, a human remains K9 unit, and potential aviation assets.

While official identifications have not been released, family members have come forward to honour their loved ones. Melissa Patterson identified her nephew, 15-year-old Eric Lynn, as one of the victims, while Julia Poff revealed that her 14-year-old son, Jake, also tragically lost his life. Julia disclosed that her estranged husband, William Poff, is the missing father who heroically leaped into the river to save the boys.

Julia recounted the heart-wrenching incident, sharing that the boys were out on the Trinity River in a kayak that capsized, leading to the tragic turn of events. She described her husband as a dedicated auto mechanic and a loving father, emphasising the challenges they faced in their relationship over the years.

The devastated families have expressed their profound grief and loss, urging others to exercise caution when near the unpredictable waters of Trinity River. As the community mourns this unimaginable tragedy, online fundraisers have been set up to support both families during this difficult time.
