A mother has recently lodged a formal complaint against Qatar Airways after her young daughter suffered a severe allergic reaction during a flight. Swetha Neerukonda, a 33-year-old resident of North Carolina, filed a lawsuit against the airline, claiming that her three-year-old daughter, who has severe allergies to dairy and nuts, had a reaction after being given a chocolate bar by a flight attendant. The incident reportedly occurred on a flight from Washington Dulles International Airport to India on April 9.

According to the complaint filed on October 31 and obtained by PEOPLE, Neerukonda alleges that despite informing the flight staff of her daughter’s allergies, the child was still provided with a snack containing dairy. Neerukonda returned to find the flight attendant giving her daughter the snack and promptly confronted them. It is claimed that the flight attendant then belittled Neerukonda’s concerns before her daughter experienced a severe allergic reaction, leading to anaphylaxis.
In response to the situation, Neerukonda administered an EpiPen injection as her daughter’s health rapidly deteriorated during the flight. Following the landing, the toddler had to be rushed to a hospital for emergency treatment. The child remained in the intensive care unit for two days as her condition worsened. Neerukonda’s lawyer, Abram Bohrer, expressed shock at the incident, highlighting the airline’s lack of urgency and appropriate response in a life-threatening situation.

Neerukonda is demanding $5 million in damages from Qatar Airways, stating that her daughter endured immense physical pain, mental distress, and a significant decrease in life quality as a result of the incident. The implications on her daughter’s future well-being are also a major concern for Neerukonda. PEOPLE reached out to Qatar Airways for their response to the allegations, but they have not yet provided a comment on the matter.

This case sheds light on the critical importance of airlines and their staff being vigilant and responsive to passengers’ medical needs, especially those with severe allergies. The incident serves as a reminder of the potential risks faced by individuals with allergies when flying and the necessity for airlines to have robust protocols in place to prevent such incidents from occurring. It also underscores the need for heightened awareness and training among airline staff to handle medical emergencies effectively.
In recent years, there have been increasing incidents of allergic reactions onboard flights, prompting calls for improved awareness, prevention measures, and responses from airlines. The story of Neerukonda and her daughter serves as a poignant example of the challenges faced by passengers with allergies and the critical role that airlines play in ensuring their safety and well-being during travel.
As the legal proceedings unfold, this case will likely spark discussions within the aviation industry about the necessary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Airlines may face increased scrutiny and pressure to enhance their policies and procedures concerning passengers with allergies, ultimately striving to create a safer and more accommodating environment for all travellers, regardless of their medical conditions.
