Scientists have made an astonishing discovery of the world’s largest spider web, which serves as home to an estimated 110,000 arachnids. This remarkable find took place in an underwater cave situated on the border of Greece and Albania in Europe. The web covers an impressive surface area of 1,076.4 square feet and accommodates a colony of spiders from two distinct species. The findings have been detailed in a recent report by the renowned international science journal, Subterranean Biology.

According to the report, the spider web discovered in the Sulfur Cave encompasses approximately 69,000 Tegenaria domestica spiders and 42,000 Prinerigone vagan spiders. This marks the “first documented case of colonial web formation in these species,” as confirmed by the study. Furthermore, molecular data analysis has revealed that the spider populations within the cave are genetically unique from other populations. Notably, there is a seasonal pattern in the fecundity of T. Domestica, with larger egg clutches observed in early summer.

The conducive environment provided by the cave has enabled the spider species to expand its colony significantly. In addition to the vast number of spiders, the cave also hosts a diverse ecosystem, boasting 512 other species spanning across 20 different families.
