In a poignant gesture that encapsulates a love story spanning over eight decades, the wife of a World War II veteran has made a heartfelt donation. Alice Beck Darrow has decided to part ways with a bullet that had been lodged in her late husband’s heart during the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941.
Dean Darrow, the veteran, was struck by gunfire during the events at Pearl Harbor, with the bullet finding its place in his heart. Fate brought Dean to the Mare Island Naval Hospital, where he crossed paths with Navy Nurse Alice Beck Darrow. Amidst receiving care, Dean mustered the courage to ask Alice out on a date before going in for surgery. Their connection blossomed into love, leading to their marriage in 1942. Together, they navigated life’s journey until Dean’s passing in 1991.
Now, at 106 years old, Alice has decided to part with the symbolic bullet that signified the beginning of their enduring love story. She shared with PEOPLE, “It became a little part of Dean, and I cherished what the bullet represented: Love.” With a sense of readiness and a desire to let others in on their remarkable tale of love, Alice felt it was time to share the legacy behind the bullet.
Recently, while aboard Holland America Line’s Westerdam, Alice took a significant step by personally donating the bullet to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial Museum. Accompanied by her daughter and son-in-law, Alice handed over the bullet during the ship’s stop in Honolulu. Reflecting on the decision, she mentioned a previous inquiry from the museum about the donation, revealing that now felt like the right time to honour Dean’s memory and their love story.
To honour Dean’s memory and their remarkable love story, Alice has taken various steps over the years. She often attended local Pearl Harbor Survivors’ Meetings, representing the role of a “Sweetheart” – a title given to the wives of the survivors. Sharing heartwarming anecdotes from their journey, Alice would recount how Dean always cherished the connection they shared, calling her his greatest treasure.
Delving deeper into their love story, Alice remembers Dean’s unwavering affection from the early days. Having spent months at sea amongst fellow sailors, Dean found solace and love in the care provided by Alice. She recalls his thoughtful gestures on special occasions like birthdays and Valentine’s Day, highlighting his generous spirit and deep affection for her.

She emphasises the importance of cherishing time spent together, travelling, and not sweating the small stuff that may arise in every relationship.
