Michigan Man Dies Just Hours Before Fulfilling Dream of Elected City Council Position

Greg Ouellette suffered a fatal heart attack just after the polls closed on Tuesday, November 4th. The City of Auburn Hills announced that Ouellette secured a seat in Tuesday’s election for City Council but passed away shortly afterward. His wife, Jeanne, shared that it was her husband’s lifelong dream to serve as a city council member and expressed that he was a well-respected leader on the city’s planning commission for almost 28 years.
Ouellette, who had been the chairman of the planning commission for nearly 17 years, was recognised for his instrumental role in guiding some of the most significant developments in the community. City manager Tom Tanghe praised Ouellette’s contributions, stating, “Greg was a well-respected and instrumental leader of the Planning Commission where he helped guide some of the most complex developments in the community.”
Jeanne Ouellette revealed to local media outlet FOX 2 Detroit that her husband passed away due to a heart attack. Despite his untimely death, Jeanne found solace in the fact that Greg had been elected to the City Council by the residents of Auburn Hills before his passing. “My husband passed away before the results were in that night. He knew because we worked hard for it,” she told FOX 2 Detroit, emphasising the dedication Greg had shown towards the community.
With 1,278 votes, Ouellette secured a position on the City Council after competing against five other candidates for one of four open seats. This marked his second attempt at securing a council seat, and his dedication to the role was evident as he had a strong feeling of victory leading up to the election, as shared by Steve Cohen, the director of community development for the city.
The new City Council is scheduled to be sworn in on Monday, November 17th, where Ouellette will be posthumously honoured for his contributions to the community. Mayor Brian Marzolf expressed his condolences to the Ouellette family and recognised Greg’s achievement in fulfilling his dream of being elected to City Council. “The City Council will announce how they plan to move forward with the selection of a new City Councilperson,” the Mayor added, showcasing the city’s commitment to honouring Greg’s memory.
