Kia Thompson, a mother of four, has recently opened up about the heartbreaking choices she’s had to make for her family amidst the ongoing government shutdown. The 31-year-old, who hails from San Antonio, Texas, was furloughed from her job, leading to a cascade of financial challenges that have deeply impacted her children’s lives. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Thompson reveals the emotional toll the situation has taken on her and her family.

Thompson shares the initial confusion and questions from her children, ranging in age from 6 to 11, regarding her sudden change in employment status. “At first, they kept asking, ‘Mommy, did you lose your job? Are you fired? Why aren’t you going into work? When are you going to work?’” Thompson discloses. She explains that she has tried to be honest with them, stating simply, “I’m not working right now.”

As the holiday season approaches, Thompson has had to have tough conversations with her children about the reality of their situation. “We told them Thanksgiving is probably not happening, and maybe even Christmas if this continues,” she shares. The financial strain has forced the family to reconsider their priorities and focus on essential needs rather than material comforts.
With bills piling up and uncertainty looming, Thompson admits to the stress of trying to manage their household amid the shutdown. “My kids are in basketball, they have field trips coming up that cost a lot, like a science camp that’s due next week. I’m trying to hold off because I just don’t know what’s next,” she laments. The pressure of keeping everything afloat is clearly taking its toll on Thompson and her family.
The shutdown has also derailed the family’s plans to purchase a new home, as Thompson’s VA loan, which had been helping with the process, is no longer accessible due to the financial standstill. “People might say, ‘Well, you had money for a house, how are you not surviving?’ I’m a veteran, so I get a VA loan, which helps a lot, but everything has completely halted,” she explains. The unforeseen circumstances have forced the family to reassess their financial stability and future plans.
Despite the challenges they are facing, Thompson remains resilient and determined to provide for her children. “You can’t stay in the thick of it for your kids. You just have to stay strong and do what you have to do. I promise you, I’m out here DoorDashing, doing what I have to do for my kids. That’s all that matters at the end of the day,” she asserts. Her unwavering commitment to her family’s well-being is a testament to her strength in the face of adversity.
As the shutdown stretches on, now 38 days in, Thompson has turned to social media, specifically TikTok, to share her family’s story and connect with others who may be experiencing similar struggles. Through her platform, she hopes to raise awareness and support for furloughed parents across the country. She sends a message of solidarity to those in similar situations: “I see you — the ones without childcare, the ones worried about where food will come from. If I can help in any way, I’m trying, and I’m praying for everybody. Just stay strong.”
Thompson’s story sheds light on the human impact of government decisions and the resilience of individuals facing unexpected challenges. By sharing her experiences, she hopes to spark conversations and drive change for those in similar circumstances. As the shutdown persists, her voice serves as a reminder of the real struggles faced by countless families across the nation.
