Coca Cola has recently launched a new campaign for the upcoming winter holidays, featuring AI-generated advertisements. This move comes after facing significant backlash last year for using AI in their commercials, which diverged from their traditional emotionally moving ads during the holiday season.

The brand’s long history of impactful holiday commercials had garnered praise from viewers. Still, the shift towards AI-generated content was met with criticism. Coca Cola’s global vice president and head of generative AI, Pratik Thakar, defended the decision by stating that the use of artificial intelligence was aimed at innovating storytelling.

Last year, Coca Cola’s AI-generated holiday campaign received negative feedback due to the perceived lack of human touch and emotional resonance in the commercials. This prompted the brand to re-evaluate its approach for the 2025 ads. Thakar highlighted that while AI played a significant role in creating the content, human storytellers were involved to ensure authenticity and emotional depth in the commercials.
The 2025 holiday campaign comprises two ads titled “Holidays Are Coming,” both seemingly crafted by AI. The first ad showcases Santa Claus opening a Coca Cola bottle, setting off a procession of illuminated Coca Cola trucks on a snowy journey. As the trucks pass by, various animals like polar bears and penguins exude wonder, lighting up Christmas scenes as they travel.
In the second spot, a pair of otters in a cabin uncorks a Coca Cola bottle, summoning the brightly lit trucks down the road. The passing vehicles attract a host of diverse animals, including rabbits, meerkats, and a seal, creating a magical and festive atmosphere. Despite the visually captivating scenes, feedback on the ads was mixed, with some viewers expressing discontent over the perceived lack of emotional depth in the AI-generated content.
Commentators on platforms like YouTube pointed out that the AI-produced commercials failed to evoke the sentimental appeal that Coca Cola’s traditional ads have mastered over the years. Some viewers longed for the heartwarming narratives that characterised the brand’s past holiday campaigns, highlighting a disconnect between the AI-generated content and the emotional resonance expected from Coca Cola’s advertisements.
In response to the mixed reactions, Coca Cola reiterated its commitment to blending heritage with innovation through AI-powered storytelling. The company aims to strike a balance between longstanding traditions and contemporary creativity by merging human ingenuity with cutting-edge generative AI technology. Despite the ongoing debate surrounding the effectiveness of AI in crafting emotionally compelling commercials, Coca Cola remains steadfast in its pursuit of innovative storytelling approaches.
As consumer preferences and advertising trends evolve, the incorporation of AI in marketing strategies continues to spark discussions within the industry. While some applaud Coca Cola’s foray into AI-generated content as a step towards modernisation, others urge the brand to preserve the sentimental charm that has defined its holiday campaigns in the past. Moving forward, Coca Cola faces the challenge of striking a delicate balance between technological innovation and the timeless emotional allure that resonates with its audience during the festive season.
