Five teenagers have been taken into custody following a tumultuous Halloween night in the Navy Yard area that led to a massive confrontation, prompting the intervention of the National Guard and law enforcement officials. According to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), the arrests were made after the teenagers gathered near the Navy Yard Metro Station entrance. Initially, the situation was peaceful, but it quickly escalated with a significant portion of the group instigating fights and disregarding instructions to maintain order on the sidewalks. The MPD, along with other law enforcement agencies such as the Metro Transit Police, United States Capitol Police, and the National Guard, responded to the scene to restore control.
Efforts to contain the situation involved street closures and directives for the group to disperse towards the Navy Yard Metro Station. During the operation, five teenagers were apprehended. Among them, 18-year-old Kaeden Brown faces charges for possessing a prohibited weapon, a knife. Additionally, a 16-year-old male was charged with illegal consumption of marijuana, while a 15-year-old male faces charges of affray. Two 14-year-old males were charged with failure to obey and resisting arrest. Due to their status as minors, the identities of the teenagers were not disclosed.
In the midst of the confrontation, an MPD officer sustained minor injuries after being knocked to the ground while attempting to restore order in the park. The injured officer received on-site medical attention from emergency services. Chief Smith announced plans to pre-emptively close several streets surrounding the park area and assured the public of heightened law enforcement presence to maintain peace and order.
