A tip left on a GoFundMe page has led to a breakthrough in a cold case murder investigation from 2017. The suspect, Michael Anthony Arredondo, who had been hiding out in Mexico for the past eight years, is now in custody, as confirmed by the Phoenix Police Department.

The tragic incident occurred in 2017 when Evin Paulos, aged 25, lost his life after allegedly being stabbed to death by his friend, Michael Anthony Arredondo, who is now 34. The altercation took place inside a car, escalating into a fatal outcome as Arredondo reportedly stabbed Paulos a shocking 30 times before fleeing the scene, leaving Paulos lifeless on June 3, 2017.
Following the crime, Arredondo fled to California and eventually made his way to Mexico, where he remained in hiding. The case went cold for eight years until a Good Samaritan in Mexico reached out to the Paulos family through their GoFundMe page, providing crucial information about Arredondo’s whereabouts.
Phoenix police were quick to act on this information, leading to Arredondo’s arrest in Mexico on September 25. He was later extradited to San Diego and then to Phoenix, where he confessed to the murder during police interviews. The relentless efforts of Phoenix PD detectives, the United States Marshals Service and the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office played a vital role in securing Arredondo’s return to the U.S. to face charges.
In a press conference held by the police, Evin Paulos’ sister, Eviein Paulos, expressed her gratitude towards the Mexican citizen who helped locate Arredondo, providing closure to their family after years of unanswered questions. Detectives emphasised that justice will prevail, sending a strong message to the community that fugitives will be pursued regardless of the passage of time.
Arredondo now faces charges of first-degree and second-degree murder, with a substantial bond set at $1.5 million. Despite numerous attempts, PEOPLE was unable to reach his legal representation for any comments on the case, as the investigation continues to unfold.
