In a digital era dominated by dating apps, one single New Yorker decided to step away from swiping and embrace the real-life dating scene with the help of a dating startup. Felicia Singh, a 36-year-old working in policy advocacy, had been using dating apps for years but found herself tired of the endless swiping and lacklustre matches. Singh expressed her frustration, stating, “No matter how innovative an app claims to be, there’s something about either the algorithm or about the convenience of swiping people that really just rarely brings a match for me.”

As Singh yearned for a more meaningful connection, she stumbled upon WeMetIRL, a company that organises in-person dating events, through an Instagram ad. The diverse range of people featured in the company’s photos immediately caught Singh’s attention. Desiring a space with inclusivity and diversity, she decided to give it a try. Encouraged by a friend, the two created a PowerPoint presentation to apply for an event at a Brooklyn bar. To Singh’s surprise, they were accepted, and she embarked on a new dating adventure.

Attending her first WeMetIRL event, Singh found herself surrounded by mostly women but enjoyed the sense of community and support. The night was filled with entertainment, including comedy sets and presentations from strangers advocating for their friends. Singh emphasised the positive impact of the event, stating, “I kind of let go with the fact that I was going to meet a person there and more so really enjoyed being in the community of people cheering each other on.”
WeMetIRL, founded by Maxine Williams, aims to combat swiping fatigue and create a fun, engaging, and diverse environment for young singles. Williams, driven by her own experience as a Black woman feeling excluded from traditional dating events, prioritises inclusivity in her company. Initially sceptical attendees quickly became converts, with many expressing surprise at how enjoyable and unique the events were.
Inspired by the success of WeMetIRL, siblings Jake and Jillian Kushner founded MeetIRL, another New York-based dating company focusing on in-person events. The company utilises online questionnaires to match attendees based on compatibility factors, ensuring a more tailored and personalised experience. With a diverse range of attendees spanning different age groups and backgrounds, MeetIRL emphasises creating genuine connections beyond just romantic relationships.
Despite not yet finding a romantic connection through these in-person events, Singh remains optimistic about the potential of forming meaningful relationships. The dating startups offer a refreshing change from the digital dating landscape, providing opportunities to meet new people, make friends, and perhaps stumble upon a romantic spark. Singh acknowledges the importance of managing expectations when attending such events, highlighting the open-ended possibilities that each encounter may bring.
The dating startup scene continues to evolve, with a growing number of singles seeking alternatives to traditional dating apps. Through innovative approaches and a focus on real-life interactions, these startups are reshaping the dating landscape and offering an exciting avenue for meaningful connections. Whether it’s attending a quirky event or engaging in thoughtful conversations, singles like Felicia Singh are embracing the offline dating experience with optimism and an open heart.
