Hip-hop artist Cam’ron has recently taken legal action against fellow rapper J. Cole, alleging that he is owed a substantial sum of $500,000 in royalties stemming from their collaborative track titled “Ready ’24.” The lawsuit, filed by Cam’ron, whose real name is Cameron Giles, claims that the dispute revolves around their joint work on the song released in 2024.

The legal complaint, lodged in a New York court on Tuesday, October 28, delves into the backstory of their collaboration. The two artists initially joined forces on the track “95 South” in 2021, featured on J. Cole’s album ‘The Off-Season.’ Following the success of this initial collaboration, Cole approached Cam’ron in December 2021 to collaborate on another song for an upcoming album. As per the terms agreed upon, Cam’ron was to maintain creative control over the final product, receive due credit, and also secure a commitment from Cole to participate in a future joint project – potentially a new single or an appearance on Cam’ron’s podcast, ‘It Is What It Is.’
Subsequently, in June 2022, the duo convened at Electric Lady Studios in New York to record “Ready ’24,” with Cam’ron contributing to the songwriting process. However, Cam’ron asserts that during the recording session, he explicitly communicated to Cole that he would not authorize the release of the track until Cole fulfilled his promise of collaborating on a future project. Despite this understanding, Cole allegedly proceeded to release “Ready ’24” on his album ‘Might Delete Later,’ without adhering to the agreed-upon terms.
In response to the lawsuit and claims of unpaid royalties, a representative for J. Cole has yet to offer a formal response to the allegations as of the time of reporting. Moreover, Cam’ron’s legal team also highlighted additional grievances in the filing, asserting that Cole failed to honour the commitment to partake in another collaboration. Requests for Cole’s participation in pre-recorded songs were reportedly turned down by the artist, who insisted on initiating a fresh collaborative effort from scratch. Despite repeated efforts by Cam’ron to materialize this new joint project, the purported collaboration never came to fruition.
In light of the alleged breach of contract and payment disputes, Cam’ron is seeking not just the $500,000 in owed royalties but also reimbursement for legal fees and any other relief deemed appropriate by the court. The legal battle between the two respected figures in the hip-hop industry sheds light on the complexities of creative partnerships and the importance of upholding commitments in joint ventures within the music realm.
As the lawsuit unfolds, fans and industry insiders eagerly await further developments regarding this high-profile dispute over financial obligations and unfulfilled promises between Cam’ron and J. Cole. Stay tuned for updates as the legal proceedings progress, potentially shedding light on the intricacies of royalty agreements and collaborative endeavours in the competitive landscape of the music industry.
