In a remarkable medical breakthrough, a man’s vision was saved after an acid attack by using innovative procedures involving donated placenta tissue. Paul Laskey, a resident of Newcastle, England, faced a traumatic incident when an assailant sprayed battery acid into his left eye while attempting to mug him and his son in February 2023. Recalling the harrowing experience in an interview with the BBC, Laskey described the immediate burning sensation and loss of sight, terming it as “horrific.”

Promptly rushed to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI), doctors suggested a groundbreaking procedure utilising tissue from a donated placenta to aid in the healing of Laskey’s eye. Despite initial doubts, Laskey underwent the treatment which has shown promising results. He shared his journey on Good Morning Britain, highlighting improvements in his eyesight, although depth perception still presents challenges.
The procedure involves the transplantation of amniotic membrane from the placenta, as explained by Francisco Figueiredo from RVI. Highlighting the uniqueness of the treatment, Figueiredo stressed the significance of placenta donation, emphasising the role of generous mothers who contribute to such life-saving initiatives. The placenta tissue’s properties are known to reduce inflammation, prevent scarring, and promote rapid tissue regeneration, as substantiated by the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Nurse Victoria Carroll, who works on the placenta donation programme, commended the mothers who choose to donate this precious organ post-delivery. She explained the process is sterile, making it suitable for planned Caesarean section deliveries. Emphasising the impact of each donation, Carroll noted that a single placenta can potentially benefit up to 100 individuals, underscoring its crucial role in nourishing babies during pregnancy and subsequently aiding patients like Laskey.
Laskey’s case underscores the remarkable advancements in medical science and the life-changing impact of organ donation. The collaborative efforts of medical professionals, donor mothers, and recipients exemplify the transformative potential of innovative treatments in restoring hope and vision to individuals facing such adversities. The success of this procedure serves as a testament to the power of medical research and compassion-driven initiatives in enhancing the quality of life for patients in need.
As Laskey continues his recovery journey, his story stands as a beacon of resilience and the indomitable human spirit. The use of donated placenta tissue to save his eye not only highlights the importance of organ donation but also underscores the critical need for ongoing research and advancements in medical technology. Moving forward, such successful cases pave the way for future innovations in healthcare, offering renewed hope for individuals confronting similar challenges.
