In a remarkable turn of events, a snowmobile rider found himself buried by an avalanche but was successfully rescued in a dramatic operation captured on camera. The incident took place in the Shrine Bowl vicinity of Vail Pass Recreation Area, with the Summit County Rescue Group (SCRG) swiftly responding to the emergency just after 12 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 17.

According to reports, two men were caught in the avalanche, resulting in one of them being fully buried under the snow. The other man immediately called 9-1-1 and began efforts to locate his trapped friend. As rescue crews navigated through the debris field, they spotted the corner of the rider’s deployed avalanche airbag sticking out of the snow, providing a crucial clue to his location.
Body camera footage shared by the Summit County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) showed the intense efforts of the rescue teams as they dug through the snowpack to reach the trapped rider. Against all odds, the man was discovered stuck under two feet of snow, having miraculously survived over an hour in the freezing conditions.
Dave Wandel, a member of the SCRG, expressed the disbelief shared by the rescuers, stating, “We were all just expecting the worst, really… so we just didn’t expect someone to be found alive.” Despite his ordeal, the rescued rider sustained only minor injuries and was conscious but cold when finally reached by the rescuers.
The swift and coordinated efforts of the deputies and the Summit County Rescue Group were instrumental in ensuring the successful rescue of the snowmobile rider. The Summit County Sheriff’s Office commended the dedication and skill of the rescue teams, highlighting their pivotal role in the positive outcome of the incident.
Avalanche experts noted that the day of the incident posed high avalanche danger due to intense storms in the area. The SCRG emphasised the critical importance of having essential avalanche safety equipment such as transceivers, probe poles, and shovels, as timely location and extraction are crucial for survival in such situations.
The rescued snowmobile rider was transported to Summit Medical Center for treatment of early-stage hypothermia, underscoring the significance of prompt medical attention following exposure to extreme conditions. The fortunate outcome of this rescue operation serves as a testament to the bravery and expertise of the rescue teams involved.
As stories of survival like this one continue to inspire, it reinforces the importance of preparedness and safety measures when venturing into avalanche-prone areas. The resilience and quick response of the rescue teams have undoubtedly saved a life and exemplified the unwavering commitment to preserving human life in the face of nature’s challenges.
