Finnair, a Helsinki-based airline, found itself in the midst of unexpected disruptions as it announced the grounding of all eight of their A321 planes, affecting over 11,000 travellers. The decision to suspend service on these planes was made due to safety concerns regarding the seat covers installed on the aircraft. This move forced the cancellation of around 70 flights, causing inconvenience to thousands of passengers. However, Finnair reassured that all planes would be back in service by the end of October, with the process already underway.
The airline disclosed that the safety concerns stemmed from the manufacturer of the original seat covers not verifying the impact of washing on the fire protection of the covers in the required manner. As a precautionary measure, Finnair is in the process of replacing approximately 1,700 seat covers across the affected planes. While one aircraft has already resumed operations, five more are expected to be back in service within a week. The remaining two planes are scheduled to return to operation by the end of the month.

In light of the grounded planes, Finnair has taken measures to minimise the impact on passengers by leasing two aircraft with crews to operate part of their network during the suspension period. Despite these arrangements, the airline acknowledged that passengers could still face flight cancellations and overbookings until the full fleet is operational again. Finnair assured affected customers that they would be contacted directly in case of any changes to their flights.
Pekka Korhonen, Finnair’s Senior Vice President of Technical Operations, expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to customers and emphasised the airline’s commitment to safety. He stated, “The safe operation of our flights is the foundation of everything we do,” underscoring the airline’s priority towards passenger safety and comfort. Korhonen further elaborated that the decision to ground the aircraft was taken promptly upon realising the issue with the seat covers, highlighting Finnair’s proactive approach towards safety maintenance.
Founded in 1923, Finnair operates flights connecting Europe, North America, and Asia. The airline’s swift response to the safety concerns reflects its dedication to ensuring a secure travel experience for all passengers. Despite the disruption caused by the flight cancellations, Finnair’s proactive measures and transparent communication demonstrate their commitment to resolving safety issues efficiently.
Travellers affected by the cancellations are encouraged to stay updated on any changes to their flights through direct communication from Finnair. The airline’s focus on passenger safety and operational integrity remains unwavering as they work towards restoring full service on all A321 planes by the end of October.
