College Student, 19, Was About to Break Up with Her Boyfriend. He Then Allegedly Strangled Her to Death and Fled to Germany

A 19-year-old student from the University of Arizona, Julissa Rubi Salazar, was tragically discovered deceased in her apartment on 6 August during a welfare check requested by her family. The incident has shocked the local community and raised grave concerns about domestic violence and safety among students.

According to the Tucson Police Department (TPD), first responders arrived at Salazar’s residence near the university’s main campus and found her body displaying signs of trauma. The TPD was alerted after her family initiated the wellness check, leading to a swift investigation by authorities.

In the wake of the discovery, the police launched an investigation and subsequently issued an arrest warrant for Varun Batchigari, Salazar’s 20-year-old boyfriend.
