“Wizards of Waverly Place” Star Jennifer Stone Clarifies That She Never ‘Quit Acting’ to Become Nurse: ‘We Can Be Two Things’

Jennifer Stone, best known for her role as Harper Finkle in the hit Disney Channel series ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’, has recently returned to acting in the show’s revival, ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’. In a candid interview, Stone highlighted her unwavering commitment to both her acting career and her profession as a nurse, dispelling misconceptions that she had abandoned the entertainment industry for a so-called “normal job.”

In her conversation with TV Insider, Stone expressed amusement at the notion that she quit acting. She noted, “The cosmic comedy of it all is that returning to acting was always the plan.” Stone graduated from nursing school in December 2019, not long before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. “I thought, ‘Okay cool. Now I can get back to acting,’” she explained, reflecting on how the global crisis altered her anticipated career trajectory.

Throughout the pandemic, Stone worked as an emergency room nurse, describing the experience as a “baptism by fire”. She remarked on her surprise at being recognised by patients even while wearing full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Stone recounted one instance in which, despite being heavily masked and gowned, a COVID-19 patient recognised her voice. She was touched by the positive response, noting how rewarding it was to bring a moment of joy to someone experiencing fear and discomfort.

The actress turned nurse reflected on how her dual careers have influenced one another. “Acting and nursing, they’re both such empathetic fields,” she pointed out, emphasising the necessity of empathy in both professions. “In nursing, empathy is imperative, and in acting, it’s essential. You have to find the core of any person,” she added. Stone believes that her experiences in nursing have enhanced her acting skills, making her a more versatile performer.

Her character Harper Finkle, a creative and quirky friend to the protagonist Alex Russo, remains a beloved figure among fans of the original series, which aired from 2007 to 2012. Stone pointed out that people often misunderstand the duality of her career. She stated, “I was like, ‘No, no, no. We can be two things.’ We can be like Harper, where she writes and designs.”

During her interview, Stone also touched on her educational journey, explaining how a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes prompted her to shift her studies from psychology to nursing. This change was not only about pursuing a career but also about gaining a deeper understanding of herself.
