Rachel’s husband, Eric, contracted COVID-19 in February 2021 and spent seven harrowing weeks in the intensive care unit of the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. Tragically, he passed away on June 17, 2021. Reflecting on her experience, Rachel shared that witnessing the compassionate care provided to her husband during his illness ignited a deep desire within her to support others in similar situations. “It put something in my head that I just needed to help and care for people,” she stated.

Following Eric’s funeral, Rachel took a brave step towards her new career path by returning to education. Despite not having completed her GCSEs in math and English during her first attempt at school, she pursued these qualifications and successfully achieved them. With renewed purpose, she then enrolled in a university nursing programme.
On her recent graduation, Rachel expressed disbelief at her accomplishment, stating, “I can’t believe I’ve done it.” She recounted how a supportive friend had always encouraged her to consider nursing, a notion she had dismissed, believing she wasn’t clever enough. Now, she finds herself not only qualified but also invigorated by her journey.
Rachel’s path to becoming a nurse was far from simple. Throughout her studies, she balanced academic demands with the responsibilities of motherhood. Rachel admitted that there were times when she doubted her capabilities, especially while managing her children’s active schedules alongside her own rigorous study commitments. “I just felt like, ‘Am I making a mistake? I’m just taking so much time away from my family to do this, is it worth it?’” she recalled.
However, Rachel remained steadfast in her resolve, knowing that her pursuit of education was setting a powerful example for her children. “They knew I was doing it to show them that it doesn’t matter what happens in life, or how old you are. If you want to do something and you put your mind to it, then you can do it,” she conveyed.
Her youngest daughter, Ebony, who is 13, expressed immense pride in her mother’s achievement. “Obviously with my dad dying, it’s been so hard for her. And I’ve tried to help her through it a lot,” Ebony said, highlighting the emotional journey the family has navigated together.
As Rachel embarks on her new career as a nurse, she reflected on what her late husband would think of her accomplishment. “He would just be immensely proud; he always was,” she shared, acknowledging the enduring support and belief he held in her potential.
Rachel Ohene-Adjei’s journey underscores not only personal tragedy but also the strength of the human spirit. Her story serves as a poignant reminder of the power of compassion and the importance of following one’s dreams, even in the face of adversity. As she steps into her new role as a nurse, Rachel is ready to make a difference in the lives of others, inspired by the love and care that surrounded her family in their time of need.
