Brandon Claybon, a breakout talent in the entertainment industry, is currently captivating audiences with his portrayal of Martin Richardson, a senator grappling with a dark past, in the popular CBS daytime drama “Beyond the Gates.” The show, which debuted in February 2025, has not only propelled Claybon into the limelight but has also allowed him to reflect on what it means to pursue one’s dreams.
At 37, Claybon describes himself as “shocked” to be living the life he envisioned during his childhood. Speaking to PEOPLE, he attributes much of his determination and resilience to his early years spent playing tennis. The sport, he explains, instilled in him vital life skills such as discipline and self-reliance. “In singles, you’re solely responsible for your success,” he notes. “It teaches you that the determination you need is essential not just in sports, but throughout your life and in your craft.”
The Tennessee native always dreamt of being part of the entertainment world, inspired by what he saw during commercial breaks and in soap operas. The emotional depth of this storyline requires a profound understanding of Martin’s experiences. “There’s a lot of trauma involved that I needed to connect with,” he shares.
In addition to the character’s struggles, Claybon also delved into Martin’s profound love for his husband Bradley “Smitty” Smith, played by Mike Manning, and their two children, Samantha and Tyrell. He explains that the unconditional love depicted in the series is something he has never personally experienced, necessitating significant reflection on what familial love entails. “I had to write down pages about why I love these people so much,” he reveals.
Claybon further elaborates that while the emotional aspects of Martin’s character were challenging to explore, the political savvy required in the role felt familiar. “Once you grasp the love and sacrifice, the rest comes easily,” he notes. The combination of personal conviction and political responsibility forms a complex character that Claybon is excited to portray.
