The Michaels family from Champaign-Urbana is entering a new phase as their four children—a set of quadruplets—recently graduated from Normal Community High School. Gavin, Maggie, Lauren, and Reese Michaels have celebrated their academic achievement, but the prospect of attending different colleges has begun to settle in, marking a significant transition for both the siblings and their parents.
Eighteen-year-old Gavin shared his perspective on their unique upbringing, stating, “We’re just like, ‘Yeah, it’s pretty normal,’ because that’s the only thing we’re used to.” Growing up as quadruplets has shaped their close-knit relationship, which they cherish deeply. Lauren added, “We have a really great bond, so we can tell each other anything,” highlighting the rarity of such a connection among siblings.

Parents Jon and Tiffany Michaels faced significant fertility struggles before welcoming their quadruplets through in vitro fertilisation on February 19, 2008. Tiffany, 46, reflected on the overwhelming joy of pregnancy, saying, “I was just so thrilled to be pregnant. I was so thankful and blessed that we were going to be able to have children.”

As children, they celebrated their birthdays with personalised cakes and serenades, allowing each one to savour their special day, despite their close birth order. Maggie remarked, “Looking at other people who don’t share a birthday, it’s definitely probably nice to get your own, but honestly…I wouldn’t trade it for the world.”
The recent graduation was an emotional milestone for the Michaels family. Jon, 49, expressed mixed feelings: “We’re thankful for who they are and happy for them. But at the same time, it’s a little sad for us because it’s like, ‘Oh, we’re getting close to them departing.’” Indeed, the next phase brings the bittersweet reality of the four heading off to different universities across the country.
Gavin will be attending the University of Cincinnati, while Maggie is bound for the University of Northern Iowa. Lauren has chosen Illinois State University, and Reese is set to join the University of Missouri. With each sibling planning to reside in different states, the prospect of separation looms large. Lauren admitted, “I was actually really struggling with this two days ago,” acknowledging the emotional toll of contemplating their imminent distance.
Although the siblings have experienced a range of emotions about their separation, they also express excitement about the opportunities that lie ahead. Reese stated, “Obviously I’ll miss my siblings, but I think I’m excited just to go see what it’s like without my siblings for a certain amount of time and just grow as a person.” Their shared upbringing has equipped them with a strong foundation, which they hope to build upon individually.

Tiffany expressed warmth in their family dynamic, saying, “When they’re home, we’ll pick up right where we left off and just enjoy the time we do have together.” The commitment to nurturing their connection will be vital as life paths diverge.
