Following the completion of autopsies, the bodies of Rob and Michele were released back to their family on December 19th after authorities ruled their deaths as homicides caused by sharp force injuries. The detailed medical reports from the coroner are not expected for another 90 days. Nick Reiner, the couple’s son and the accused, is currently in custody without bail and is set to have his arraignment on January 7th, 2026.

According to reports by The New York Times, the couple’s daughter, Romy, discovered her father’s body after concerns were raised when a massage therapist was unable to reach her parents. Shockingly, Romy was unaware that her mother had also been fatally injured in the same incident. Nick was apprehended by authorities near the University of Southern California approximately six hours after the discovery of his parents.

No motive for the killings has been disclosed by the authorities. However, prosecutors are considering seeking a heightened sentence due to multiple murders and the alleged use of a dangerous weapon, believed to be a knife, in the commission of the crime. Sources have revealed that the tragic event occurred shortly after a heated argument between Rob and Nick at a social gathering hosted by Conan O’Brien.
Nick Reiner has previously spoken about his struggles with addiction and homelessness, which began during his teenage years. A source close to the Reiner family described the ongoing challenges they faced in trying to support Nick, stating, “It’s just a parent’s worst nightmare.” Rob and Michele Reiner, who tied the knot in 1989 after meeting during the production of “When Harry Met Sally…,” also leave behind two other children, Jake and Romy.
In the aftermath of the devastating loss, Jake and Romy Reiner have received unwavering support from their close circle of friends in Hollywood, including Billy Crystal and Albert Brooks. The family’s friends are reportedly providing protective support to the siblings as they navigate this harrowing time. Jake and Romy expressed their profound grief over the loss of their parents, describing them as their “best friends” in a statement shared with PEOPLE on December 17th.
As the investigation continues, further details regarding the case are anticipated to unfold in the coming months. The untimely deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner have sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry and beyond, prompting an outpouring of condolences and support for their surviving family members. The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the profound impact of such senseless acts of violence.
