### Premature Baby Overcomes Challenges to Finally Come Home

Mary Barthell, a 28-year-old mother from Georgia, recently experienced immense joy as she brought her daughter, Loyal Milani, home after a lengthy stay in the NICU. Loyal Milani was born at just 23 weeks, weighing a mere 1 lb. and 4 oz., on December 30, 2024.
Mary Barthell shared with PEOPLE that her pregnancy with Loyal Milani was not without challenges. Having given birth to her son Asher just a year prior, she faced emotional turmoil and physical difficulties during this pregnancy. Despite a relatively normal pregnancy up to her second trimester, Mary encountered a medical emergency when her water unexpectedly broke at home at 23 weeks gestation.
The journey that followed was fraught with uncertainty and fear as Loyal Milani faced numerous health complications, including chronic lung disease, pneumonia, and rhinovirus. Over 146 days in the NICU, the tiny fighter underwent multiple procedures to support her fragile health.
Mary’s NICU experience was emotionally taxing, as she grappled with being present for her other children while also being there for Loyal Milani. She described the experience as heart-wrenching, questioning her abilities as a mother during the challenging moments.
Despite the obstacles, Loyal Milani’s resilience shone through, and she was able to leave the NICU on June 15, just before Mary’s birthday. The homecoming was a beacon of hope for Mary, who expressed gratitude for witnessing her daughter’s progress and growth.
At 11 months old, Loyal Milani still relies on oxygen and a feeding tube, but her improvement is evident. Mary remains optimistic, acknowledging that her daughter has more milestones to achieve but is determined to provide her with the best care and support.
Looking ahead, Mary is focused on accessing the necessary therapies, such as speech therapy, to aid Loyal Milani’s development. She has set up a GoFundMe page to assist with the medical expenses, illustrating her unwavering dedication to her daughter’s health and well-being.
