A man from Utah with autism has disappeared once again, just days after being found safe following a previous disappearance that lasted nearly a month. August Beckwith, a 29-year-old man, was reported missing by his mother, Lori Beckwith, on December 15th. He had gone missing after being discharged from the hospital, as shared by Lori on Facebook. She reached out to the community for help, stating, “We need your help.” August was last seen in Salt Lake City near State Street and 2nd Avenue, without shoes, phone, money, or credit cards, making him a vulnerable adult.

August first went missing on November 17th and was last spotted in the Sugarhouse neighborhood of Salt Lake City two days later, as reported by the National Autism Association. He is nonverbal and was going through a severe mental health crisis during his previous disappearance. His mother mentioned that August ran off after leaving a local hospital, showing signs of improvement. He was sighted at Apollo Burger in Taylorsville on December 10th, and the Taylorsville Police Department were informed by a concerned individual who requested a welfare check. Fortunately, officers were able to identify August using a fingerprint scanner and reunited him with his mother on December 11th.

Lori explained in a Facebook post that the situation of August going missing again was not due to carelessness but highlighted the challenges individuals with autism and trauma face during transitions. She expressed gratitude for the community’s involvement and mentioned that the Salt Lake Police Department is actively handling the case this time. She emphasised the importance of community support in locating August and bringing him back safely.
The National Autism Association provided insight into behaviours like August’s, describing them as wandering or elopement and common among individuals with autism. These behaviours often stem from a need to communicate or seek comfort, especially when facing challenges with coping or regulating emotions. Lori is now seeking volunteers and drivers to assist in the search efforts in Salt Lake City. Detective Michael Ruff of the Salt Lake City Police Department urged anyone with information to come forward and help in locating August by contacting the police at 801-799-3000.
The heart-wrenching events surrounding August’s disappearances underscore the challenges faced by individuals with autism and their families. Lori’s unwavering commitment to finding her son and the supportive response from the community demonstrate the power of unity and compassion in times of crisis. The public’s assistance and cooperation are crucial in ensuring the safe return of August and emphasise the importance of raising awareness about the unique needs of individuals with autism.
The story of August Beckwith’s repeated disappearances serves as a poignant reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by some members of society and the crucial role of community support in times of adversity. As the search for August continues, the unified efforts and unwavering determination of his mother, along with the assistance of law enforcement and volunteers, offer hope for his safe return. It is a testament to the resilience and strength of individuals with autism and the unwavering dedication of those who strive to ensure their well-being and safety.
