Residents in South Memphis have expressed their concerns about living near Elon Musk’s giant data center. The community fears potential long-term health impacts following the rapid construction of the facility last year.

One 76-year-old resident, Easter Knox, shared her distress at the situation. She highlighted the importance of clean air, stating, “It’s God’s given air, and man shouldn’t take it away from us.” Knox, who lives just three miles from the xAI data center, explained that she can no longer open her windows due to a persistent foul smell in the air.

South Memphis, particularly Boxtown, where Knox resides, has a predominantly Black population with a median household income of $36,000. The area has a history of battling pollution-related health issues, even before the data center’s construction. The presence of the facility with its associated pollution has only added to the residents’ challenges.

Criticism has been directed towards the company, xAI, for the negative impact of its operations on the local community. The supercomputer, named Colossus, is described as the world’s largest AI training system with a significant output of GPUs. Concerns have been raised about the use of gas turbines to power the massive machine, without the necessary pollution controls initially in place.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has taken action against xAI, alleging violations of the Clean Air Act. This legal challenge emphasizes the community’s stand against the environmental risks posed by the data center. Despite these concerns, city officials have defended the company’s presence, citing economic benefits such as job creation and increased tax revenue.
Residents have not been reassured by the economic justifications put forth by city officials. The community’s fears about potential long-term health effects due to the data center continue to grow. A public hearing earlier this year saw hundreds of concerned individuals expressing their worries about the impact of the facility on their health and well-being.
The debate surrounding xAI’s data center highlights broader concerns about environmental justice and corporate responsibility. As residents engage in protests and legal challenges, the issue underscores the ongoing struggle to balance economic development with community well-being and environmental protection. With the dismissal of an appeal to revoke xAI’s air permit, the residents remain vigilant in their efforts to safeguard their health and environment from potential harm.
The clash between economic interests and public health concerns in South Memphis serves as a microcosm of the larger environmental challenges faced by communities worldwide. As the community continues to speak out and demand accountability, the story of living near Elon Musk’s data center resonates with broader conversations around environmental justice and corporate accountability.
