A group of third-grade students from St. Mary’s Episcopal School in Tennessee recently took on a special project involving pop superstar Taylor Swift. In a creative STEM project, the students set out to design a wedding dress for the singer, inspired by the fairy tale Cinderella. The young designers didn’t stop there; they also crafted a range of whimsical accessories to complement the dress, including a veil and a custom carrier for Swift’s beloved cats.

According to their teacher, Kristen Hehn, the project sparked an incredible energy among the girls, with everyone enthusiastically contributing to the design process. The idea for the project emerged when Swift announced her engagement to NFL star Travis Kelce last August. The news was met with excitement at the school, and the students were eager to partake in the wedding preparations for their music idol.

The school’s STEM teacher, Carrie Ruhland, seized the opportunity to integrate the real-life event into the curriculum by incorporating a sewing unit into the Makerspace class. Drawing inspiration from the birds and mice in Cinderella who create her dress, the students envisioned Swift’s cats inviting them to design a dream wedding gown for the Grammy-winning artist. The girls eagerly embraced the project, delving into the creative process with enthusiasm.

Throughout the project, the students engaged in discussions about colours, cultural influences, and design elements, ensuring that every detail of the dress was carefully considered. Divided into three classes, each group focused on a specific aspect of the design, from the bodice to the skirt and the accessories. The result was a stunning ensemble that included a bespoke veil, a cat-themed wedding ring, tinsel cat ears, and even heels with cat motifs.
One particularly charming addition to the ensemble was a hand-sewn white BabyBjörn carrier, allowing Swift’s feline companions to accompany her down the aisle. Ruhland praised the girls for their collaborative spirit and their willingness to build upon each other’s ideas, creating a harmonious and cohesive final product. The project not only provided a fun and memorable experience for the students but also offered them valuable hands-on learning opportunities in STEM.
