A heartbreaking case has unfolded in Texas, where a mother and her boyfriend are facing capital murder charges following the death of her 3-year-old son. Chelsea Berg, 30, and Christopher Alexander, 30, have been accused of subjecting Berg’s son, Dawson Zamora, to weeks of abuse before his passing, as reported by CBS Texas.

The devastating series of events began on October 14 when Alexander rushed the unresponsive Dawson to Medical City McKinney. Medical professionals at the hospital noted severe injuries on the child that did not align with Alexander’s explanation of hearing a noise from another room. An affidavit obtained by PEOPLE revealed that Dawson suffered from serious brain trauma, brain bleeding, bruises across his body in different stages of healing, and anal trauma.
Berg recounted leaving the house at around 7:20 a.m. that day, leaving Dawson in Alexander’s care. Upon receiving a panicked message from Alexander after lunch about rushing Dawson to the hospital, Berg rushed to the scene. When she arrived, Alexander allegedly provided no explanation for the incident and sought legal representation, refraining from cooperating with investigators.
Investigators delved into the pair’s text messages and uncovered a disturbing trail of discussions about Dawson’s deteriorating condition in the weeks leading up to the tragic event. Berg expressed concerns about bruises and injuries inflicted on Dawson, even labelling Alexander as “dangerous” in one text message.
The case took a harrowing turn when prosecutors upgraded the charges to capital murder following Dawson’s death on December 7. Berg was re-arrested on the new charge, while Alexander, who had been in custody since October, now faces the same grave accusation. Dawson’s biological father, Dahrian Zamora, took to social media to mourn his son, lamenting that the tragedy could have been averted and urging for justice.
The heart-wrenching details of Dawson’s story have reverberated far and wide, prompting an outpouring of support for the grieving family. Priscilla Moore, Dawson’s great-aunt, expressed the family’s devastation in a GoFundMe campaign, highlighting the urgent need for extensive medical care for Dawson prior to his passing.
As the community grapples with the senseless loss of a young life, the case serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of vigilance and protection when it comes to the most vulnerable among us. The legal proceedings against Berg and Alexander are poised to shed further light on the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and seek accountability for the unfathomable loss of young Dawson Zamora.
