The Swedish Royal Court recently confirmed Princess Sofia’s encounters with Jeffrey Epstein following the release of emails linking the two. Reports surfaced after the Swedish outlet, Dagens Nyheter, published correspondences between Epstein and financier Barbro Ehnbom, a mentor to Sofia who attended her 2015 wedding to Prince Carl Philip. According to the emails, Ehnbom introduced Sofia to Epstein in December 2005, suggesting a meeting in the Caribbean. However, the palace clarified that Sofia was merely introduced to Epstein around 2005, before his conviction for soliciting prostitution in 2008 and subsequent sex trafficking charges in 2019.

The emails revealed Epstein’s interest in Sofia and another woman named Camilla. Although Epstein offered to arrange an acting school opportunity for both women, visa issues ensued. The Swedish Royal Court confirmed that Sofia did not communicate with Epstein beyond their initial introduction 20 years ago. Princess Sofia, now 41, has distanced herself from any association with Epstein, prioritizing her royal duties and family life with her husband, Prince Carl Philip, with whom she has four children.
Prior to her royal obligations, Princess Sofia rose to fame as a model, highlighted by a controversial photo shoot for a Swedish magazine. Her marriage to Prince Carl Philip in 2015 was a subject of public scrutiny, leading to online harassment. Despite facing negativity, Sofia and Carl Philip utilised their platform to establish the Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia Foundation, focusing on combating hate speech and cyberbullying.
The recent revelation of Princess Sofia’s brief encounter with Epstein coincided with the Swedish royals’ presence at the annual Nobel Prize ceremony, a notable event on their calendar. While Sofia has been a regular attendee in past years, she was notably absent this year, leaving Prince Carl Philip to represent the family alongside his parents and siblings. The absence raised questions about Sofia’s decision amidst the ongoing scrutiny of royal connections to Epstein.
Princess Sofia is not the first royal associated with Epstein, as seen in the recent stripping of titles and honours from Prince Andrew by King Charles due to his association with the late Epstein. Andrew’s ties resurfaced in renewed interest following claims by Virginia Giuffre, who accused Andrew of sexual misconduct arranged by Epstein. Despite denials from Andrew, the fallout from the scandal has led to significant repercussions within the royal family and public perception.
The Swedish Royal Court’s confirmation of Princess Sofia’s limited interaction with Epstein sheds light on the complexities of royal associations and the challenges of navigating past relationships under public scrutiny. As the Swedish royal family continues to uphold their duties amidst external controversies, the focus remains on maintaining transparency and accountability within the monarchy. Princess Sofia’s commitment to her current roles and responsibilities reflects a distinct approach to handling past connections while prioritising her present royal obligations and family life.
