Mitch Winehouse, the father of the late British singer Amy Winehouse, has initiated a legal battle against two of his daughter’s close associates regarding the auctioning of her clothing. He is seeking approximately $1 million in damages in the lawsuit. The taxi driver from England, who serves as the administrator of Amy’s estate, claims that Catriona Gourlay and Naomi Parry profited from selling Amy’s clothing items at auctions held in the United States in both 2021 and 2023. Parry previously worked as Amy’s stylist.

The legal dispute arises from Mitch’s assertion that the two friends personally benefited from the sale of Amy’s belongings without proper authorisation. Amy Winehouse passed away at the young age of 27 on July 23, 2011, due to alcohol toxicity. Documents obtained by PEOPLE reveal that Mitch was initially approached by Darren Julien of Julien’s Auctions regarding a potential sale of Amy’s items to support the Amy Winehouse Foundation. However, Mitch declined this offer.

Despite initially rejecting the idea, Mitch eventually agreed to proceed with the auction in collaboration with Julien, with the intention to donate a portion of the proceeds to the Foundation. The auction took place on November 6 and 7, 2021. However, following the event, Mitch alleges that numerous items were sold under Parry and Gourlay’s names without his consent.
Furthermore, it is claimed that the defendants continued to sell more of Amy’s items, including those that had not been auctioned in 2021, at another event organised by Julien’s Auctions on May 19 and 21, 2023. In response to queries, Julien’s Auctions declined to provide comments until after the trial, which is scheduled to be concluded on Thursday, December 11. Mitch is seeking damages exceeding $975,000 in total.
Reflecting on their loss, Mitch and Amy’s mother, Janis Winehouse-Collins, have emphasized that they remember Amy every day, with her absence deeply felt. The Amy Winehouse Foundation, established to honour her legacy, focuses on educating young individuals about the dangers of substance abuse, mirroring Amy’s struggles, and offers music therapy to underprivileged and terminally ill youth.
The Foundation’s initiatives extend beyond awareness campaigns, as seen with the establishment of Amy’s Place in East London in October 2016, providing support for female addicts transitioning to life after rehabilitation. Janis expressed the positive impact of their work, underscoring the Foundation’s commitment to making a difference in the lives of those in need.
As the legal proceedings unfold, the case sheds light on the complexities of managing a deceased celebrity’s estate and the importance of upholding their legacy with integrity. Mitch’s legal actions underscore the significance of protecting Amy Winehouse’s memory and ensuring that any commercial exploitation of her personal effects is done with respect and in accordance with established protocols.
The trial represents a critical juncture in preserving Amy Winehouse’s artistic and personal legacy, highlighting the challenges faced by families and administrators in safeguarding the posthumous interests of iconic figures. As fans and stakeholders await the trial’s outcome, the case serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring impact and legacy of a beloved artist like Amy Winehouse.
