A former paramedic in Florida is facing trial this week after being accused of molesting an unconscious woman while on duty in an ambulance and committing credit card fraud offences. James Melady, 38, was arrested in September 2024 following an investigation that uncovered a video of the alleged incident that took place in October 2021. Flagler County Sheriff’s Office stated that Melady was charged with sexual battery on a helpless person and video voyeurism on a victim over the age of 19. Sheriff Rick Staley expressed his dismay, stating that Melady abused his position as a first responder to exploit victims.

The incident came to light when police in Daytona Beach, Florida were conducting an investigation into Melady on unrelated cases and stumbled upon the video of him molesting the unconscious woman in the ambulance. The victim, who was unaware of the attack, was being transported to a hospital by Flagler County Fire Rescue at the time of the incident. Melady, a former paramedic with the rescue team, was arrested after the victim confirmed the assault upon being interviewed by investigators.
Further investigations revealed that Melady had also engaged in fraudulent activities by stealing credit cards and personal identification information from multiple victims while on duty. It was alleged that he used this stolen information to make purchases, including a $715 transaction at Sam’s Club. Three victims were identified in connection with the credit card fraud case. Sheriff Staley condemned Melady’s actions, emphasising that he abused his oath and the trust placed in him as a first responder to prey on vulnerable individuals.
In March 2025, Melady faced additional charges related to fraudulent use of personal identification without consent of a victim over 60 years of age and unlawful possession of a stolen credit card. Despite the charges brought against him, online court records indicate that Melady has pleaded not guilty to all allegations. Jury selection for his trial commenced on December 8. The defense attorney for Melady has not responded to requests for comment at this time.
