Craig Melvin, the well-known NBC newsman, has shared exclusively with PEOPLE about his latest venture – launching a candle company named Melvin Made. Scheduled to debut on December 2 in conjunction with Giving Tuesday, the proceeds from this family business will be directed towards various cancer charities. Melvin expressed his enthusiasm for this project, highlighting the impact of cancer on everyone and the importance of raising awareness about screening, listening to one’s body, and discussing family medical histories. This initiative aims to serve as a conversation starter in these critical areas.

The candles from Melvin Made are proudly made in the United States, using top-quality ingredients such as coconut oil and phthalate-free fragrances. Available in two sizes, 10 ounces and 16 ounces, the collection features five distinct scents – Southern Office, Lindsay, Hilton Head, Pink Jasmine, and Betty Jo. Additionally, there is a seasonal fragrance called Fireside Frankincense. Notably, one of the scents is named after Melvin’s late niece, Jasmine, a touching tribute to her memory and the inspiration provided by his younger brother in introducing him to the art of candle making.

Despite only delving into candle making two years ago, Melvin has embraced the craft wholeheartedly. Initially experimenting in his kitchen and refining his skills through books, videos, and mentorship from an expert candle maker, Melvin’s dedication is evident in the quality of each Melvin Made candle. The personal touch extends to the collection, with each scent holding significance tied to family members, memories, and personal journeys.
The family-oriented approach is evident in the naming of the candles – with tributes to loved ones such as Melvin’s wife, father-in-law, and mother, who is a breast cancer survivor. Tragically, the family also faced the loss of Melvin’s older brother to colon cancer, further motivating his commitment to supporting cancer charities. Melvin’s annual event, the Bottoms Up Invitational, raises funds for the Colorectal Cancer Alliance, reflecting his ongoing dedication to the cause.
Melvin emphasises that this venture is more than a business – it’s a passion project driven by a shared commitment to addressing the impact of cancer on families. With a focus on utilising their platform for good, Melvin aims to maximise the positive influence of Melvin Made in supporting cancer organisations. By leveraging their reach and resources, the Melvin family hopes to contribute significantly to the fight against cancer and make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by the disease.
