Legendary entertainer Dick Van Dyke recently shared insights into the highs and lows of his life and career as he approaches his 100th birthday on December 13. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Van Dyke opened up about his journey in the entertainment industry, leading up to the launch of his new book ‘100 Rules for Living to 100’.

Van Dyke’s illustrious career has spanned iconic films and TV shows such as Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and The Dick Van Dyke Show, which have left a lasting impact on audiences of all ages. However, amidst the glamour of showbiz, the actor revealed the challenges he faced in his early years while trying to juggle his professional commitments with the responsibilities of raising a family.
Struggling financially in the early days of his career, Van Dyke recalled the hustle required to make ends meet for his family. From working on game shows to performing in nightclubs and pulling double shifts as a disc jockey, he vividly remembers the sacrifices he made to establish himself in the industry. Despite the gruelling schedule that left him with minimal sleep, Van Dyke persevered, driven by his determination to create a better life for his loved ones.
Acknowledging the toll his demanding career took on his family, Van Dyke admitted that there were instances where his children may have felt neglected due to his relentless pursuit of success. Nonetheless, he expressed gratitude that his family never lodged any complaints against him, highlighting the unwavering support and understanding they provided during those challenging times.
In his reflections, Van Dyke emphasised the rarity of being able to pursue a career that aligns with one’s passions, underscoring his enduring love for his craft. Unlike many who find themselves confined to office jobs they dislike, Van Dyke remarked on the joy he found in waking up every day to do what he loved, a sentiment that has sustained him throughout his career in entertainment.
The veteran actor also credited his wife, Arlene Silver, for infusing his life with a sense of youthful exuberance. Marrying in 2012, Van Dyke praised Silver for her ability to keep him present in the moment, bringing him happiness each day and fostering a vibrant spirit within him. Grateful for her influence on his life, he described her as a source of joy and responsibility, attributing much of his contentment to her presence.
As Van Dyke nears his centennial milestone, he contemplates his legacy beyond the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. Expressing a desire to be remembered for the joy and entertainment he brought to children through his work in children’s music and entertainment, he humbly downplayed the importance of personal remembrance in favour of the enduring impact of his creative contributions.
In his latest book ‘100 Rules for Living to 100’, Van Dyke offers readers a glimpse into his life journey, sharing the wisdom and insights accrued over his long and purposeful existence. Through his words and actions, he hopes to inspire future generations to find joy in their pursuits and leave behind a lasting legacy that continues to brighten the lives of others.
