Florida First Responders Face Allegations of Hazing Teenage Firefighter

Four first responders in Florida have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the hazing of a 19-year-old firefighter. The incident, described as “unacceptable, inexcusable, and fundamentally contrary to the core values of our fire department” by Marion County Fire Rescue Chief James Banta, occurred at the Marion County Fire Rescue Station 21 in Ocala.

The suspects, identified as Edward Kenny III, Seth Day, Tate Trauthwein, and Kaylee Bradley, were charged with offenses including kidnapping, battery, robbery, and principal/accessory to robbery. The hazing reportedly started with the smearing of grease on the victim during his shift at the fire station on November 16. The situation escalated when the suspects pursued the victim in a parking lot, forcibly removed his pants, and used a belt to strike him.

Sheriff Billy Woods revealed that the motive behind the hazing was a TikTok video that the victim had on his phone. The suspects attempted to coerce the victim into providing the password to his phone and resorted to violent acts when he refused. According to reports, the victim was waterboarded three times with a towel and physically assaulted before a call for service interrupted the altercation.

Upon learning of the allegations, Marion County Fire Rescue supervisors promptly notified the sheriff’s office, leading to an investigation and subsequent arrests. Chief Banta emphasised that the actions of the suspects were reprehensible and contrary to the values upheld by the fire department. As a result, the suspects have been terminated from their positions.

While details of the case continue to unfold, including the status of the suspects and any legal representation they may have secured, the victim remains employed at the fire station and has chosen not to take time off.
