The incident occurred on October 4 in Morgan Hill, California, while Sebastian was getting ready to make s’mores with his uncle and cousins. The tabletop fireplace suddenly burst into flames, causing burns to Sebastian’s face, neck, and arms.

The family set up a GoFundMe page to support Sebastian and his family following the accident. The page has already raised over $48,000 to assist with the boy’s medical expenses and ongoing treatment. Sebastian sustained burns covering approximately 15% of his body, and he has been in the hospital since the incident occurred.

Sebastian’s father, Omar Reynoso, described his son as a resilient child amidst the challenging recovery process. Sebastian has undergone multiple procedures, including a tracheostomy to aid his breathing due to severe swelling in his airway. Additionally, he has undergone skin grafting surgery for his third-degree burns.

The family remains hopeful for Sebastian’s recovery despite the long road ahead. Doctors have identified a Grade 3 subglottic stenosis, indicating a severe narrowing of his airway. This condition may necessitate reconstructive surgery in the future. Sebastian is expected to remain in the hospital for at least another month for continued treatment and observation.

Omar Reynoso expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support the family has received through the GoFundMe page. He shared his amazement at the community’s generosity and kindness during this challenging time. The tabletop fireplace involved in the incident was identified as a product from the brand Rozato, which runs on rubbing alcohol or bioethanol.

According to a United States Consumer Product Safety Commission alert issued on December 19, 2024, fire pits using such flammable liquids are considered unsafe. The alert emphasised the dangers associated with these products, citing cases of injuries and fatalities. The CPSC urged consumers to discontinue the use of these fire pits and for sellers to cease their distribution.

Rozato has not yet responded to requests for comments on the incident. The family is dedicated to Sebastian’s recovery journey, with loved ones aiming to raise $200,000 through the GoFundMe page. As of November 6, over $48,000 has been donated towards this cause. Sebastian’s family remains hopeful for his healing and appreciates the support received during this difficult time.
