A young boy’s harrowing journey from a traumatic accident to finding solace and understanding among peers was recently highlighted at a special camp for burn survivors. Tovie Cousin, now 11 years old, suffered severe burns in a BBQ accident when he was just a toddler. Today, he is finding comfort and healing alongside other children who have faced similar challenges.

Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE, Tovie Cousin expressed that being at Camp Beyond the Scars, an annual retreat for young burn survivors, has created a sense of belonging and empathy. He mentioned, “Everybody’s different in their own way. They all have different burns, different stories to their burns.” Tovie’s experience underscores the importance of community and shared experiences in the healing process.
At the heart of this healing journey is Camp Beyond the Scars, a free annual event organised by the Burn Institute. This year, 19 campers and four young adult leaders, all burn survivors, came together to engage in various activities aimed at emotional and physical recovery. From archery to swimming, the camp provides a safe space for these children to bond over their shared experiences and support one another.
For Tovie Cousin, attending the camp has become a cherished tradition. Reuniting with familiar faces and sharing his story in a non-judgmental environment has been transformative for him. His mother, Alika, shared how the camp has not only benefited Tovie but has also connected their family to a network of support and understanding that they wouldn’t have found elsewhere.
Another participant at Camp Beyond the Scars, Karmen Verdugo, 18, shared her own journey of recovery after sustaining burns from a fire pit incident. Through the camp and connecting with other survivors, Karmen found the courage to address her mental health struggles and move towards acceptance and healing. Her story exemplifies the resilience and determination of these young survivors.
The impact of Camp Beyond the Scars goes beyond physical healing; it fosters emotional support and a sense of community among participants. Karmen Verdugo emphasised, “We’ve all gone through the same thing — different stories — but we’re all still healing from it. A burn doesn’t stop people from living and having fun.” This message of resilience and positivity resonates throughout the camp.
During the camp, Karmen Verdugo demonstrated her leadership skills by helping a homesick boy named Anthony. Her kindness and reassurance not only comforted Anthony but also solidified the bond among campers. The story of Anthony building a Lego toucan as a symbol of the joy he found at the camp showcases the transformative power of connection and empathy.
As these young survivors navigate their healing journey, Camp Beyond the Scars stands as a beacon of hope and strength. Through shared experiences, support, and understanding, children like Tovie Cousin and Karmen Verdugo are finding healing and resilience in the face of adversity. Their stories serve as a reminder of the power of community in overcoming challenges and embracing a brighter future.
